WHAT ARE ORTHODONTICS?

Orthodontics focuses on diagnosing, preventing, and correcting misaligned teeth and jaws. This field not only enhances your smile but also improves oral health by making teeth easier to clean, reducing the risk of cavities and gum disease.

At Stanmore Bay Dental Studio, our traditional braces are a reliable solution for addressing issues like crooked teeth, overbites, underbites, and minor jaw alignment, leading to improved function and aesthetics. With their proven effectiveness, traditional braces offer a comprehensive approach to achieving a healthier, more confident smile.

STRAIGHTEN UP YOUR SMILE, STRENGTHEN YOUR HEALTH.

WHY GET BRACES?

Braces are more than just a tool for achieving a beautiful smile; they play a crucial role in maintaining and improving oral health. By correcting misalignments, braces make it easier to clean teeth effectively, reducing the risk of cavities and gum disease.

Here’s why getting braces might be the right choice for you or your child:

  • Correct Misalignments:

Braces effectively address crooked or crowded teeth, ensuring they are properly aligned. This not only enhances your smile but also makes it easier to clean your teeth, reducing the risk of cavities and gum disease.

  • Improve Bite Function:

Misaligned bites, such as overbites, underbites, and crossbites, can lead to difficulties in chewing and speaking. Braces help correct these issues, improving overall oral function and comfort.

  • Prevent Future Dental Problems:

Early intervention with braces can prevent more serious dental issues from developing later in life. By addressing alignment and bite problems early, you can avoid the need for more invasive procedures in the future.

  • Enhance Self-Confidence:

A straight, beautiful smile can significantly boost self-esteem and confidence. Whether it’s for a child, teen, or adult, the psychological benefits of a confident smile are invaluable.

  • Support Jaw Health:

Properly aligned teeth and jaws can alleviate jaw pain and reduce the risk of temporomandibular joint disorders. This leads to improved comfort and overall oral health.

STILL GOT QUESTIONS?

FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS

How long does orthodontic treatment typically take?

Treatment duration varies depending on individual needs but generally ranges from 12 to 24 months. Your orthodontist will provide a more specific timeline based on your treatment plan.

Will braces be painful?

Some discomfort is normal, especially after adjustments, but it is usually manageable with over-the-counter pain relief. Our team will provide tips to help alleviate any discomfort and ensure your experience is as comfortable as possible.

What is the Ideal Age for Orthodontic Treatment?

The best time for braces is typically between ages 10 and 14, when the mouth and jaw are still growing. However, adults can also benefit from orthodontic treatment and achieve excellent results at any age. Early intervention often leads to better outcomes and a shorter treatment duration.

What foods should I avoid with braces?

It’s best to avoid sticky, hard, or chewy foods that can damage your braces, such as gum, popcorn, and hard candies. Our team will provide a comprehensive list of foods to avoid and tips for maintaining your braces.

How often will I need to visit the dentist during treatment?

Regular check-ups are typically scheduled every 4 to 8 weeks to monitor progress and make necessary adjustments. These visits are crucial for ensuring the best possible outcome and keeping your treatment on track.

What happens if a bracket or wire breaks?

If you experience any issues with your braces, contact us as soon as possible. We will schedule an appointment to repair the damage and ensure your treatment continues smoothly.

How do I care for my teeth while wearing braces?

Maintaining good oral hygiene is essential. Brush your teeth after every meal and floss daily to remove food particles and plaque. Our team will provide specific instructions and tools to help you keep your teeth and braces clean.

Can I play sports while wearing braces?

Yes, you can still play sports while wearing braces. We recommend wearing a mouthguard to protect your teeth and braces during physical activities. Our team can help you find the right mouthguard for your needs.

Will I need to wear a retainer after my braces are removed?

Yes, wearing a retainer is crucial to maintaining your new smile. Retainers help keep your teeth in their new positions and prevent shifting. Your orthodontist will provide guidance on how long and how often to wear your retainer.

Are there alternatives to traditional metal braces?

Yes, we offer clear aligners as an alternative to traditional braces. These are a more discreet option and can be removed for eating and cleaning. However, they may not be suitable for all cases. Our team will help you determine the best option for your needs.

Do I have to see a specialist orthodontist?

Dr Claire Mulquiney, our lead dentist, is currently undertaking a postgraduate diploma in orthodontics and is able to provide fixed braces and aligner treatment for mild to moderate malocclusions.

However, complex treatment will require referral to a Specialist Orthodontist who has completed a 3 year full-time masters degree in orthodontic treatment.

It is best to discuss your suitability for treatment with our dental team.
